Why does it take so long to search for the latest windows updates ?

This has happen on any device I had windows 8.1 on. Right now it is happening with a Surface 3.

When this happens for example there are only 2 important updates it is not like it is looking for over 50 or 100 updates.

It has been like this for me on several installations of 7 for the past few months. I din't know what the deal is.

If it makes you feel better, the updates for the 10 preview come in a lot faster, so that could turn into the answer to that problem.

Its MS focusing on 10. 7 is security updates only and its barely a priority. :awe:

Both my HP Stream 7 tablet and my desktop (both with W8.1) find updates very quickly...or at least not any slower than usual.

Not sure why it would suddenly be any different for others.

I update a Windows 7 system yesterday and it took 2 hours to find, download, and install the updates (for the last few months). Most of the time was spent searching for updates. This is just one of the reasons I think Windows 10's mandatory auto updating is a huge mistake.

Heh. I thought your post was going to say "this is why auto-updating should be mandatory, so people aren't months behind then have to wait 2 hours for 100 updates". Your last sentence definitely threw me for a loop.

I think it's gotten much better with 8/8.1 although it could just be my SSD. Also the first search (either first ever or first after installing any updates) will always take longer. Futher searches with no available updates take almost no time at all.

It's awful how long windows update takes on fresh installs and out of date machines now.
