I am running a school lab. We have IBM computers with Windows XP SP2 on them. We run a program called Deep Freeze to prevent students from changing the settings of the computers. The issue is that windows keeps updating. It restarts the computers as vit is supposed to, but it does it while my students are working on them. We do have the automatic updates set to update at a specific time each week. I am at a loss toexplain why the computers are constantly updating. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Heh, we had the same problem with Deep Freeze (or similar computer locking program in the labs) at my old college (at another college now, no longer work for IT there). I left before anyone figured out how to solve it :(

Man those guys trying to type reports were pissed at us, but it was rather amusing I must say......

When I was at college I worked for the IT Department and we used Deep Freeze. The machines will constantly update because Deep Freeze will not let the machine's files change, so windows essentially updates (or thinks it does), restarts and is at the same state before it even updated.

Ask one of your tech support people to come in and (1) update the computers (2) turn off Windows Automatic Updates. They will disable Deep Freeze (probably until the next restart) to do this (you need a password to do so). You shouldn't turn Automatic Updates on the machines anyway. We never updated the machines, but we always had images that were up to date. The labs were re-imaged every other week anyway, so patches were installed when the new image was.
