[Error number: 0x8024001E]

Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page. You may find the following resources helpful in resolving the problem:
For self-help options:

*This happens after I go the normal route through IE and click "Express Install"

Any ideas????

Possible virus/malware issue? You got a current-generation antivirus program running? Done spyware/adware checks lately? What is your WinXP installation patched to at this time, SP2 or SP1 or no SP yet?

Also confirm your system's time & date are correct, although I think anymore it'll suggest that itself.

Make sure the background intelligent transfer service (BITS) is started.

Hmmm, thats interesting. I went into Comp Manage to start it (it was set to manual) and it would not start.

"Windows could not start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service on Local Computer. Blah, blah, blah.....Error Code -2147014851

BITS should be on manual, but automatic updates should be on automatic and started. Also make sure Everyone has full control on the HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\BITS key as well as the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate key.

This error can occur if msxml3.dll is not registered.

Try the following:

1. Click Start than run

2. In the Run box, type "regsvr32 MSXML3.dll" and than click "OK."

and try and install the update again

If that doesnt work also make sure these are registered:

wuapi.dll
wups.dll
wuaueng.dll
wucltui.dll

Cheers,

Oh, and you can take the direct approach and download SP2 right here, if that helps for the moment.
If he has an "express install" option on the WU site than it means he is using the v. 5 site so he is probably already running SP2.

Norton Antique Edition
I see. Might want to move up to something that detects Trojans, adware and spyware sometime. Free 15-day trialware of Norton Antivirus 2005 and McAfee VirusScan 9.0 if you want a month of free commercial antivirus protection. It appears NAV2005 will disable your Windows Firewall by design so it can use its Wormstopper feature, but I would re-enable the Windows Firewall if you don't have a router. Not sure why they would do that... 😕

Uninstalled Norton"Antique Edition"
Downloaded SP2 manually and installed
Did this.....2. In the Run box, type "regsvr32 MSXML3.dll" and than click "OK."

Still getting WU error🙁

Right, can I suggest installing a current-gen antivirus software (trialware or otherwise), updating and fully configuring it to use all the options, and do a thorough scan.

Yeah, I will do that. I did install a free one called AntiVir. I will go ahead and try a trial version of a well known AV🙂 Any suggestions?

edit: I am in fact behind a router

McAfee is the simpler one to configure, I'm trying the 15-day trialware myself right now. We use McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i at work so I'm somewhat of a McAfee fanboy 😀 Too bad I can't buy THAT version for home 🙁

Try this ?

"Minimum requirements called for windows XP or better so I installed linux"

I actually link this for fun but its actually a good system and closely clones windows.
