This should not still be happening. The free upgrade to Windows 10 is long over, but two different machines at different locations have started to upgrade to Windows 10 for no reason. One now has Win 10 on it, the other I canceled out of. Anyone else?

Windows 7 updates are almost at the end. So just turn off auto updates on Windows 7 .. You should run manual update check from Microsoft until they no longer support Windows 7 .. That will stop Win 10 from trying to upgrade

It is still somewhat confusing and annoying when your computer starts upgrading to a new version without your knowledge or consent. Once the update starts you can not do anything until the update is done. On old hardware this can take awhile. Then rolling back (If you still want Win 7) can take a couple more hours. Hopefully this was just a glitch in the windows update and has been taken care of by now.

I did a clean install of Win7pro pre-SP1 recently on an old Dell system using the Dell restore disk. After a couple of Windows Updates it asked me if I wanted to upgrade to Win 10 instead of continuing with the Windows Updates.

Any way to be proactive and get the Win 10 upgrade? I just did a fresh install of Win7 pre-SP1 as well and so far I'm still going through all of the Win 7 updates.

It should not still be available. If the OS was installed before the close of the free upgrade (as in the OP's case), it's possible a flag was enabled to permit it to upgrade to 10 but the actual upgrade was delayed for some reason, possibly pending another install, or amount of free space, or something deeper. If the PC was upgraded to Windows 10 before, but then downgraded to Windows 7 at a later time, the key is still legit for Windows 10, and may be upgraded back at any time. Something in Windows Update's coding may then trigger the upgrade during a Windows Update on such machines. Other than that exception, fresh installs should not have that (I'm sure intentional) glitch.

There is a program called GWX Control Panel, that was popular for a while when Windows 10 first came out among people who wanted to avoid being forced to upgrade to Windows 10. It can enable/disable the flags that trigger the update, delete the updates that enable the telemetrics prior to the upgrade, as well as delete the automatically downloaded pre-installation files for Windows 10 that can take up several gigabytes of free space. It can still be used for that if you're getting the Windows 10 install screen when you try to run Windows Update. I haven't tested it, but you may also be able to use it to set the flags to enable the upgrade as well.

If his computer has a retail key for Windows 7 then Windows 10 should install and activate using that key just fine. If it is an OEM Windows 7 it may or may not activate Windows 10 .... Anyone here remember the real web site that hosts all the Windows 10 versions for download ? ? I had it a few months back, but forgot what it was or where I bookmarked it, if I saved it ? ?

OP I can can visualize your post next year complaining that you did not Upgrade in time and ""crying"" that you need to buy new Win10 Lic. (and may be seek a Pirated version). o_O - :p - :( - ;).

So make an Image of your current Hard Drive, Upgrade to Win10 and put back the Win 7 Image if you want to stay with it.

You do not have to store Win 10. If it was activated the Lic. Image is on Microsoft Update server and any time Win 10 is Reinstall on this specific computer it will be Reactivated.

That was not the site I was thinking of. I think it might have been Technet or the new equivalent of Digital River .. They had all the Windows 10 versions there, for easy download of the full ISO files

Actually Jack, it was this site I was thinking of. Everything there is proper downloads. I have downloaded the last 3 versions of Windows 10 both 32 and 64 bit versions. I keep them on an external hard drive in case I ever need them again.

Hmm... While it might Not be Pirated software (ISO none active files).

I think it is Not Legal distribution of Windows' software.
