Windows Update still not working? UPDATE: Problem Solved

It has not been working since last night. I can get to the web page, and I can scan my computer, but when I actually review and install updates, all of them fail. Is anyone having this same problem?

UPDATE: I have found from reading MS forums that it is due to the fact that certain ISP's have not gotten the new IP addresses from the DNS yet, as they have changed the servers around. Adding 208.172.158.234 download.windowsupdate.com to your hosts file in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc will fix the problem. I guess you can just put it there, install the updates, and remove it, as it probably will be fixed when you need to update later in the future.

Don't run a bootleg Windows OS, or no updates show up.

Run a legit one with a legit cd key 😉

Haha, it is a legit copy of Windows XP, and all the updates do show up. It just fails to download them.

isekii that's not true... they show up either way. 🙂

I've had the "install failure" problem once... and it never ended up working thru windowsupdate. I had to find the patch itself thru technet.com instead. What are the updates you need ? Maybe you'll have to do them individually if you can find them.

when i go to windows to update i get:

Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the most out of your computer.

The latest version of Windows Update is available on computers that are running Microsoft Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 2000 (except Windows 2000 Datacenter Server), Windows XP, and the Windows Server 2003 family.

and that's it, hmmm...this is weird, never seen it before.

Yeah, I also got that message occasionally last night. Maybe Microsoft servers are messed up.

That is the web site that I have been using.

YES!!
I have been having the same problems all day long. I've been trying to update both my laptop and desktop (legit copies of windows) and have been getting failed downloads. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

It has been know that MS windows update sometime crashed during install or IE would timed out or hung during scan for update. What you can do is close down IE then retry, maybe a reboot would need prior to update. And then there is suchthing as download the SP manually & install it, and once that is done try update again. Also try download IE6.1 & install if prior to windows update to see if that would work.

Hmm, the folder doesn't even exist. It's a clean install. I just tried it on my other computer. Same problem. :frown:

Your not the only one. I have been having this problem since last Thursday. I also see alot of postings about this problem at the MS XP newsgroup but no rep from MS has given any insight to the problem.

Hmmm, I think it must be only with XP, as many people with 2K are having no problems.
