This is probably related to a problem I had with a customers system yesterday. In my case, HiJack This found some blank default Microsoft entries, and after I told it to fix those the system could browse for new locations in Word, Explorer, Internet Explorer or Excel.
Another guy used Spybot to repair the default settings one time, and dealt with the another by removing the HP software, and another by applying the registry fix listed in the MS article.
Somebody else just removed the MS update that caused the problem.
So this is more common than MS leads us to believe I thinks.
