I turned off the Auto Windows update option since i don't want to get SP3 for now, will prolly do it on my next fresh install of XP. However, i do want to get all the other Windows updates. I went to the Update site and chose custom installation but afterwards i was taken to a screen like this:

http://www.update.microsoft.co.../default.aspx?ln=en-us

What do they mean by me needing some latest components? Are they talking about SP3? If not what are they offering? If it is SP3 how do get around installing it and get other updates? Please help me out, guys.

SP3 won't be a "mandatory" update on Windows Update for a while. You won't get it unless you ask for it.

And it won't install by itself anyway. There is a EULA that needs to be accepted when it comes down through automatic updates.

You can hide it on Windows Updates if you do not want it. Some folks have had some issues with
being stuck in a reboot loop, but that was mainly with the first beta versions. Hopefully MS fixed it in
the final version. Me personally, when it comes to a major service pack like this, I wait a few months
for them to iron out the inveitable bugs that get in. For now just download as many of the most current
MS updates ... You can omit IE7 & WMP11 if you do not like or want them. But you should install .NET 3.5

In that case, even though I have a Dell 8200 ... SP3 stays off until
they fix it .. Same for my Toshiba laptop Satellite 1415-S103
However, any other MS updates will likely get installed one by one
as needed
