Windows Update problem - I can't accept the license

Hi all,

I'm trying to use Windows Update with my brand-new computer running WinXP Pro SP1.

Scan For Updates --> Review and Install Updates --> Install Now

A pop-up window called "Microsoft Windows Update -- Web Page" asks me to please read the following license agreement. Under the text box, it says "Do you accept the terms of the pending license agreement?"

And I do. I really do.

But there's no buttons to accept or reject the agreement. No "Yes" or "No" or "Next" or "Cancel" or whatever.

So I'm stuck. What gives?

Thanks in advance for any helpful reply.

Try scrolling to the bottom of the license agreement to see if the yes box becomes available.

I haven't seen this exact problem. I have seen buttons that disappear and reappear depending on where you cliick in the window, and I have seen boxes where the lower or right section of the content is cut off and inaccessible.

The first one, I am guessing, is due to Nvidias more recent video driver that has an option to have Windows redraw windows faster. I think in some cases the buttons get drawn in the wrong order so that something covers them up. If you click where they should be, the buttons appear. I just checked the Windows update site and the buttons are right along the bottom of the whole box. "Accept" is just to the left of center. The lower edge of the buttons is cut off on my computer.

If you choose Don't Accept, install will close. To install
you must accept this agreement.

_______________ Accept____ Don't Accept____ Print

The second can happen when you change screen resolutions lower or font size larger, or if you choose XPs options to use old Windows style of menues, or large icons. The resolution problem may disappear after a few reboots, or changing the resolution again. The menues and icons problem you are stuck with, unless you go with XPs standard selection.

Clear your browser cache and also make sure you don't have port 443 blocked. It seems MS is now using SSL for Windows Update ( though it gives no warning )

You may need to temporarily change your screen resolution and font settings. Sometimes non-scrollable frames are not big enough to accommodate the contents, so they stay hidden.

Problem was somewhat remedied by going into my Display properties, and changing the DPI setting from Large (120 dpi) to Normal (90 dpi).

While this didn't reveal the buttons entirely, it revealed the top of the buttons, which was enough to enable me to agree to the license.

Non-resizable windows are irritating.

Thanks for the tips.
