Windows Update, Now Laptop Doesn't Boot

Running Windows XP on my laptop, I attempted to update to Service Pack 2. It was taking awhile to install and when I came back, an error message displayed that the installation FAILED. So not thinking anything, I shut-down and went on with my business.

Just recently I attempted to start up the laptop and it went straight to an error screen. I can't even boot into safemode or get into the bios. It allowed me to test different components and everything tested OK except the System Board.

The error displayed under the System Board are:

DEV 001
ERR 91
FRU 3610

Please help. I have no idea how to fix this... 🙁

I googled that error and found lots of results; here are a few:

hi all,
just want to share about the above error message on Thinkpad 600E
because i know there are lot of people out there who have this particular
problem.
i found out that the problem is related to battery pack.
i fixed mine by adjusting the battery lock and put the battery pack
properly into its place.
if you still get the error i advise you to discharge-recharge battery
pack or replace it.

Fix for Dev 001, Err 91, FRU 3610 on TP 600 (1:34pm EST Wed Mar 17 2004)
The fix for this problem is so simple. The systemboard errors are due to a bad battery pack. It can be corrected by removing the battery pack & rebooting your computer.

I hope you read this before you spend hours, like I did, trying to find the solution elswhere.

Thanks, ABC, for your solution. - by Betty

I'd suggest googling, and going to IBM and reading their hardware reference manual for your board, which should have information on what that means.
