Windows Update/Microsoft Update

A buddy of mine bought a OEM copy of XP Pro SP2, and had me reformat his hard drive and do a clean install. The install went smooth, but when I went to use Windows Update I get the side scrolling green bar for 20 minutes or so and then I get this error 0x8DDD0009.
I google it and find instructions to put windows update into the trusted sites list, I follow the instructions, reboot, and try updates again. Still doesn't work.
I then see on windows update Microsoft's advertisement for Microsoft Updates the supposedly new and improved way to do updates. Well I install it and try it out. Doesn't work. Takes me to a page that looks identical to Windows Update with the difference being it says Microsoft Update. I get the side scrolling green bar for 15 or so minutes and decide that if it hasn't worked by now it probably isn't gonna.
I gave up and turned auto updates on..It works, but very slowly. It's taking 30 minutes to do the initial first couple.

Any ideas of what might be wrong?

Specs: Celery 500MHz, 320MB ram, 13GB HDD, 3000/768 DSL, XP Pro SP2, spywareguard, spywareblaster, zonealarm free 6.5.722, and AVG

thanks

Drivers are up to date and there is 3 other PCs on the same network and none of them have any problems with update.
I managed to get the updates by turning on automatic updates, but wish I could get manual update to work.

thanks

Having you tried reinstalling? I've had "odd" problems like this with a fresh install and just cleaning the install disk real good and trying again fixed the problem. Like some files were corrupted during the install, but it installed fine anyway.

You might also try swapping the NIC, or check ping results or download a large file and see how it does.

Also, have you tried it again since getting some updates through Auto Updates?

When Windows Updates blows up, you should be given an option of contacting MS tech support for assistance. Take advantage of it, as it is likely the only free support you will ever get from them. 😀 I have had a few servers encounter issues with WU, and they were quick to respond, and would you believe, helpful. 😉

thanks for the advice..I got it fully updated with auto updates and told my buddy to try it manually in a week or so and see if the problem is still there.
If nothing else he can just keep auto updates on.

thanks all
