Windows update killed my computer

myjaja

Diamond Member
It was installing SP 2 and other updates on my computer. I restarted after it finished. Then when it gets to the XP login screen, the blue screen of death pops up for 1 second then immediatly dissapears, and my computer restarts itself. It does this over and over. WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY COMPUTER?? 🙂

Please help. Thanks. 🙂

Meet SP2, slayer of all that is good. I had this problem multiple times myself, the only way to deal with is is to reformat your hard drive and never try to install it again. Ive had this happen on several different computers several different times and have tried everything myself and people that work at MS can think of. The only option I have ever heard of is to reformat, so i hope you didnt have any critical data on that hard drive. Good Luck!

P.S. if you get a miracle and do get into windows by chance, dont try to uninstall SP2, it only makes matters worse, trust me.

STAY FAR AWAY FROM SP2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

while some of the machines that i worked with SP2 on were AMD64 systems, alot of them werent that had the same problems. And even with the ones that were AMD64, none of them had the Hollywood Plus Decoder, so that definately isnt the only cause of the problem.

Spyware, adware or viruses come to mind. You can uninstall SP2 from the command line in Recovery Console, as I recall... lessee here... Google powers, ACTIVATE!! 😛
Ahhh, there we go 🙂 Click the Use Recovery Console link. If you can now boot up again, then try

[*]Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta

[*]30-day trialware of Webroot Spysweeper

[*]WinSockFix if your browsers stop browsing after ripping out malware

[*]30-day trial of Kaspersky Antivirus Personal 5 if you have no antivirus or wimpy antivirus (uninstall other antivirus software first). Or some other reputable current-generation antivirus if you prefer.

There's a MS hot-fix available that you install before you attempt an SP2 installation....fixes some compatability problems. Never tried it though. I've installed SP2 on a dozen different machines without incident.

One of the worst post's I've ever seen  SP2 has many good features and is well worth installing. The vast majority of installs are fine.

Where is this hotfix available? Any links?

The hotfix is KB 885626. Microsoft site is too slow today to find a direct link.

This addresses a problem that causes a computer to hang after installing SP2, after the first reboot....

Apparently you install it before SP2.....If it works for you, you owe me. 😀

find yourself a copy of windows with SP2 included in the installation, your old key should work fine as long as versions are the same

Heehee... I have SP2 already slipstreamed so I don't need the hotfix. I was just curious.

So I owe you NOT. 😉

Thanks for the replies guys. Sorry for my late responses.

I tried every single suggestion. Nothin worked, sadly. 🙁 The computer would NOT boot into safe mode, at all. I tried the suggestions in the links provided in this thread. Still a no go. What was odd is that it acted as if SP 2 was never even installed. 😕 I went through the process of using Recovery console by booting off of my XP cd. I followed every single instruction multiple times, and I got the error saying that such a file doesn't exist, etc etc.

🙁

Perhaps I should just reinstall windows. But, I will install the Hotfix that Bluefront provided before installing Service Pack 2. Hopefully, I won't run into this issue again.

Thanks guys. 🙂

Also, any other suggestions are welcome. 🙂 I learned a lot from this thread!

I agree nerd's response is about as useless a post as you can get 🙂

I have installed SP2 on literally, without a lie 1000's of PC's with just about every hardware configuration you can imagine and in all states of health previously and only 1 has failed and that was because it didnt have enough diskspace left to extract the files 🙂

Can you boot into safe mode? If so Right click my computer > Click Advanced Tab > Click Startup & Recovery > 'Untick Automatically Reboot' Now at least next time you can see what the message is on your BSOD and its quite possibly just one driver that doesnt like SP2 which we can identify from the message.

And if all goes to pot... then when you install XP again, you can integrate the SP into XP before installing it.

I cannot boot into safe mode at all, as I previously stated in my post before yours. 🙂

How do I integrate SP into XP before installing?

Thanks! 🙂

Why bother.....there is no evidence I know about that an SP2 upgrade performs any different from an integrated install.

Also.....If SP2 is problamatic for you, it might be safer to install XP, then that patch, then SP2. Only a few minutes longer this way.

Slipstream is the topic you need to search on. Don't forget to add any drivers you may need/want.
