KB3035583 Update... does anyone know what this is for? The Microsoft explanation seems cryptic to me.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3035583

This update enables additional capabilities for Windows Update notifications when new updates are available to the user. It applies to a computer that is running Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1). Before you install this update, check out the Prerequisites section.
The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows 7" section. MUM, MANIFEST, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are very important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
The Live Update notification appeared today under important updates. I could swear that I saw it weeks ago under optional updates. I never installed it. In the infoworld link, I see others noticed the same thing.

I haven't found much on the web. One person seems to think that this is related to a new folder Windows/System32/GWX. I believe this showed up in the April update. Also a conspiracy theorist believe that this will be an instrumental part of the upgrade to Windows 10.

Before Windows 8.1 shipped, Microsoft released an update for Windows 8 that allowed for things like displaying a banner when 8.1 became available as well as a special UX for the Store to do OS upgrades. This is basically that update, from what I can tell.

Yeah, there are several updates related to possibly upgrading to Win 10. Some of the more paranoid and testy types on other forums are in something of a lather over these updates as they don't like MS offering updates that aren't directly related to the OS they are now running, as opposed to some future OS--which they may be skeptical of, despite the so-called "free upgrade".

Here's the list I saw; you can hide them or refuse them or accept them as you wish.

It appears Microsoft is serious when it comes to upgrading Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users to Windows 10. The upgrade will be free in the first year and it appears Microsoft will take that time to convince users to upgrade. Users that don’t want to receive the upgrade “advertisements” should simply not install the recommend update. If Microsoft however decides to make KB3035583 an important update it will install automatically with other Windows update.
So users of V7 and V8 can expect to see advertisements on the PC to upgrade. The conspiracy theorist that I referenced believed that MS might force users to upgrade. Regardless of whether you have choice, this is hardly transparent. I hope that I'll be able to turn off the OS Nagware.

I won't install KB3035583. I don't see others mentioned above. I guess MS will get even less transparent for those who avoid these.

To be fair, we have all been forced to upgrade from whatever version we had previous to now (end of support, end of extended support, etc), so don't let the conspiracy theorist in you get to worked up about this one.

^^^Will Win7 users be the next XP users. Forced to upgrade with a cold dying OS in their hands. Clench it until the end I suppose and never let go. We really are creatures of habit....

Having a PC is all about upgrades, most of us upgrade our CPUs ,video cards etc to play latest games or get better performance.

The word "forced" is a bit extreme, you can resist or don't bother and get left behind but then that's still your choice.

End of the day upgrades like changing hardware and software comes with the territory.

If you want the free upgrade to 10 then keep those KB patches installed.

If you do not care then uninstall them.

Just saw above mentioned KB2952664 in my Windows Update List under Important. Looking at the related article... I see

This update is provided as an Optional update from Windows Update.

This update helps Microsoft make improvements to the current operating system in order to ease the upgrade experience to the latest version of Windows.

Unrelated to this, today I saw a Nortons window pop up on my screen, letting me know that they are to soon support Windows 10. Looking at the settings of Nortons I don't see anyway to block their ads.

There will be some people like that for sure but here are other considerations. I like Windows 7, I've never had a problem with it. I want to hang onto it until I'm sure that Windows 10 actually works, and works with the hardware and software I work with. If Windows 10 does what I need it to do, I'll gladly move on from Windows 7. I'll be able to get Windows 10 Pro free for my desktop and laptop, why not?

I still use Windows XP, but for only one task. I have a slide/negative scanner and software that works fine on XP but would cost me a bundle to upgrade. It has the quality I want, it's just a little slow. The XP is a dual boot with Ubuntu that I use a lot for torrents. Why spend more when what you have does the job?

Yes, they are the opposite of those willing souls that are Beta testers for M$ that comes in the form of a new version of Windows.
