This is the first time this has happened to me but the most recent Windows update is disabling my sound. I have to perform a system restore to get it back. Does anybody know what is happening and how to fix it?
Need more info - your mobo, your sound card, etc. This week I had updates to Xp, Win 7, and Win 8.1, and nothing in sound was affected. Seems to me that something else has happened to your sound driver that may only be coincidental with the update. AFAIK, none of the updates on any system involved sound.
Asus mobo, no specific sound card, windows Vista. It is really unusual since the System restore fixed it but then the update reinstalled after the next shutdown and the same thing happened.
Windows Vista? That is sort of never-never land these days. Try this. After the update is installed, uninstall your sound driver. Then reinstal it - maybe even check the Asus website to see if there is an update for the driver.
You can also go to Windows Update and see a history of what has been installed. Each file is listed. You might then be able to determine which one is causing the problem. Then you could use your Restore, and change your updates to NOTIFY. Avoid auto instal. Then uncheck that specific one so it does not instal. You can then hide it so it does not impose itself should you return to autoinstal.
