Windows Update, IE, MSN Messenger, Automatic Updates

I have Windows 2000 Pro with SP 4. I just installed this system on Sunday and did all the updates. Till about Tuesday,

Automatic Updates won't run when I click on them from Control Panel
IE will freeze each time I go to Windows Update website
IE won't open Hotmail when I click on MSN Messenger 7.5(When I have new mail)

I've ran Spybot, Ad-Aware and I have AVG free running.

Any help please?

EDIT:
I reinstalled IE and the Hotmail/MSN Messenger thing works now.
IE still freeze when Windows Update site is accessed.
Automatic Updates won't run when I click on them from Control Panel.

Also, if viewed under Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services, the Automatic Updates says starting. It won't let me stop and start it again. If I disable and enable it again, it doesn't do anything different.

1) what are you using for a firewall? since it's Win2000.

2) you didn't mess with the Windows services, did you?

3) check the system's date & time to confirm they're fairly close to correct.

No, not using a firewall.

Didn't touch windows services

Date and time are correct.

I reinstalled IE, the msn part works now.

Still can't get Windows Update to work.

Running Windows2000 without a firewall (software firewall, or a router, or both) is not a good idea. :Q

Router = good 🙂 How about try the routine I wrote up here to get a "second opinion" on the possibility of a virus/Trojan being the culprit. And check in Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services to make sure that the Background Intelligent Transfer Service, Cryptographic Services, and Automatic Updates services are not disabled.

I looked at the services that you mentioned. The Automatic Updates service says "Starting" and there wasn't a Cryptographic Service listed. The Backgraound Intelligent Transfer Service is running as usual.

I didn't try to scan the pc with the antivirus. What about the Automatic Updates service that says "Starting"?

Anything listed under the Event Viewer (admin tools) that looks like a warning or error under any 3 of the event sources (System, Applications, Security)?

Automatic Updates service should read as 'started', so that might be the problem.

Try stopping the service and restarting it again.

The start/stop buttons or commands are grayed out. I can't select it.

Also, there are a bunch of erros under the event viewer.
