I recently installed windows service pack 2 on my system. I then uninstalled it due to an error caused by my radeon 9600 pro 256mb video card that prevented me from playing halo. However, my system seemed corrupted (frequent windows explorer crashes), so I decided to reinstall windows xp with service pack 1. Upon this install, I needed to get my security updates from windows again. I went to the update site, but it doesn't work. It gets stuck on the screen saying

"Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software...

Depending on your connection speed, this might take a minute. During this time, you may receive one or more security warnings. Review each security warning to ensure that the content is signed by Microsoft, and then click Install or Yes to install the software."

I have never had this problem before. Even automatic updates are not working. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
