Windows Update hangs at 0%

Mine was acting stupid like that awhile back - finally traced it down to the hosts file.

If you're using your hosts file, you might disable it for awhile, then try windozeupdate...

This XP or ME?

anyway read this for ME,
Open IE and went to Tools-Internet Options-Connections (tab)-clicked on "LAN Settings". Make sure "Detect Network Settings" is NOT checked. Close IE and try Update again.

Similar to Mem's answer, but I've found that with XP in IE's LAN settings, if "Automatically detect settings" is checked, Windows Update sometimes hung for me.

That's often the solution to this problem.

Thanks, but check the language and the lan settings and both were okay. Still having the problem.

found the crux of the problem - I am going thru a router. When I eliminated the router, the problem was fixed. I have a wireless router. I can use windows update from another computer that is wireless, but the computer with this problem is connected via ethernet. Why would that be different?
