Problem:
Windows Update does not work for paticular beta versions of windows xp
On scanning for updates following error is reported by IE:
line: 71
char: 2
Error: Object Required

Possible fix 1:
Right-click on the Internet Explorer icon located on your desktop. Click on "Properties"
from the menu, then click on "Settings" found under "Temporary Internet Files". Next,
click on "View Objects". Now look for "Update Class" listed under "Program File". Once
you find the "Update Class" activeX control, right-click on it and then click on "Remove".

After you have deleted this "Update Class" activeX control, visit the Windows Update
website and a new one will be installed automatically. Then try to download your updates
again.

THIS FIX DID NOT WORK IN MY CASE: PLEASE ADVISE IF YOU CAN

THANKYOU.

Sorry, but every newsgroup article I've found on the subject says no-go on the XP Beta Windows Update. I found the one you referred to as well (the fix that didn't work), but if you read that carefully, the guy said he had the "Released" version of XP, which to me, means the final version. Every other newsgroup article said betas and windows update were a non-workable combination. And frankly, at this stage, why should Microsoft update beta software for a released product? The only thing I can think of that you might want to do is look for your Windows version in your XP registry, and replace the beta number with "2600" (the released version). You might be able to fool it into thinking you have a normal version, but I would bet there's other ways for update to determine otherwise. I have used that trick to fool Win2K drivers into thinking I was running Win2K vs. XP so they would install, however.

Ive got the original version of Win2K professional. Since Im fed up with the damn errors in XP beta, Im gonna format hd and reload all the apps I need again. This will take me all night. Wish me luck.
