Windows Update Disabled - Need to re-enable

Kelemvor

Hey there,

For whatever great reason, the PC people here decided to disable the windowsupdate ability in all our PC. When we go to the site, we et a screen saying we can't use it and to check with our network administrator. I'm assuming this is done in the registry somewhere or maybe inside IE.

Does anyone know how this is done or more importantly how to undo it? We can't install our Apps we need to support unless we can update the OS.

This is Windows 2000 in case that matters.

Thanks

Welcome to the world of mandatory profiles and the restrictions that are placed with them. All you can do is log in locally as administrator.

Tony, I can log on as the local administrator but it still doesn't work. I get a message saying:

Network policy settings prevent you from using Windows Update to download and install updates on your computer.

bac, I went to that site and it works but I have no way of knoowing what's alreayd installed since it doesn't do the search of my system which is what I really wanted.

But thanks for that site link.

I had that happen to me a few times, even though I'm logged on as Admin on my box here at home. I got around it by right-clicking on "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" and choosing "run as.." , selecting "The Following User" and choosing the Administrator and entering my admin password and clicking "OK". Then go to Win Update and you should be fine.

Nope, that didn't work either. Just gave me the same thing. I'm thinking it's disabled somewhere on the PC (like in the registry) but I haven't been able to find it.

Ah well.

I had this happen to me. I usually run under another account in the admin group, but it kept giving me the same error message. The only way around this was to use the "install" admin account. It then let me update. Now my regular account's Window's update works again.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\Disablewindowsupdate

Change the value to a 0.

If you are connecting to the internet via a firewall, the firewall may be blocking the ActiveX controls that Windows Update uses. In which case you're SOL.🙁

Are you trying to use the old (normal) Windows Update site, or the new one (v4.windowsupdate.com). I think you will need administrative privileges, regardless.

Well, in case anyone has any other ideas...

This is in Wondows 2000, it works fine in Windows NT.

reicherb - I don't have that particular listing under explorer.
jt63 - yeah I'm ehind a firewall but it works with Windows NT so I'm not sure where/how they are blocking it

SU - old site redirects to the new site...

And I deled cookies just for the hell of it.

Also just to note, under Tools, the options for Windows Update doesn't appear so it's disabled somewhere to make that not show up too.

THanks for all the suggestions so far
