Windows to Linux network file sharing

I have a mix of Windows XP & Vista systems and need to set up a RAID 5 file server that I can access within the office and also through the Internet. I think my best bet is to get a Linux server but I'm not sure if I need any special software for Linux that will alow me to share the file system with both XP and Vista. I have to be able to actually map a network drive because I have some MS Access databases that must run on the server because more than one person needs to be able to access them at a time. I also need to be able to run these Access databases through the Internet. My office uses a business DSL line. I assume that I'll have to set up Linux server with a fixed, routable IP address which means it needs to be on the outside of my office router, right?

Thanks for your help.
