I remember that either Windows 95 or 98 had this "thunder" sound when starting up. I went through all the CAB files on the Windows 98 CD and could not find it. Does anyone know that name of the .wav file and whether it's on the Win98 CD?

Are you sure that thunderclap wasn't from Sound Blaster software? IIRC my old Live! 5.1 had that.

I like this one better...

There's a story behind it.

If you listen closely, you will hear a sharp snap before the thunder. That was a spike the mic lead picked up from the strike. The lightning stuck water VERY close to our location. There was lightning in the area and the NWS issed a SMW not a minute after the strike.

I was getting ready to drop this mic (actually a hydrophone) in the water to record the sound of pistol shrimp when I almost got struck myself. I did feel a shock that was presumably induced voltage arcing from equipment to my hands. Luckily I didn't lose any equipment and get the new look myself.

Thanks a lot, especially to sharkeeper and Martin! I seem to recall now that my old Windows machines had a Soundblaster, that's why I was confused. Thanks for the links. I also found that still have some Creative CDs and the sound is indeed there.

I searched around a bit and this was the best one I could fine... it's the one I'm using now.

I have it in mp3 also, but windows needs a wav file, right?

anyway, here it is in .wav

Sorry it took me so long, I have 2 midterms tomorrow back to back starting in about 7 hours and I've been .... gasp.... studying.

Something ironic is that my Logitech z-560s I used to have are THX certified, but none of my new stuff is :)

Too bad I can't apply the THX computer speaker standards to my new stuff hehe.

I'll live with not paying $20 extra or whatever it would work out to be to have the little badge though
