now, I'd like to ask how can I get it to recognise the American shortcuts using shift?

e.g. I type shift quotations and get a question mark

I type shift asterisk and get a question mark

Not sure what you're asking, but try clearing out your cache and history. CTRL + B brings up your bookmarks as a side panel.

BTW, I found your "stupid british" comment interesting given that you spelled "recognize" as "recognise" - - the latter being the British spelling. 😉

maybe you spilt some tea on your motherboard?
 
lol, I was joking about the British. I like their system of replacing "z" with "s" it gives their literature a much nicer look.
