Windows Taking LONG Time to Shutdown....

Hi all,

after my HD had a little 'episode' (for the second time - Maxtor 200gig) i installed a fresh copy of windows onto a new 40gig HD as a temp. fix....

However, i am having a couple or odd issues when i come to shutdown the PC using the normal Start -> Turn off Computer -> Shutdown

- this takes a long time to shutdown and sometimes appears to do NOTHING does not even leave windows! 🙁(

If I go Start -> Log Off -> Switch User -> Shutdown, WIndows does log off and shutdown but takes a little longer than it should... especially if the PC has been on for a while!

I'm guessing there is something a little wrong with the windows install either that or there is a background application that windows cant seem to turn off properly...

Any ideas exactly what is causing this issue and how i can fix it???

Thanks all

- sorry for long post!

(Regedit) > HKCU>Control Panel>Desktop

Set HungAppTimeout to 1000
AutoEndTasks to 1
WaitToKillAppTimeout to 1000

And if you want a nice 'apparent' speed boost, set MenuShowDelay to 0. Or 25 or whatever.

You'll need to restart explorer to make the changes happen.

Ctrl + Shift + Esc for task manager, close explorer.exe, then File > New Task > Explorer.exe and there you have it.

Hope that helps.

wow thanks a lot! gonna give it a try now... will report back with results! 😛

- just done a quick restart and it seems much better now!

thanks again 😀

OK... so after the PC was on for a while... not over-night but all day then it took a while to shutdown again 🙁

- i had to use the log off -> switch user -> shut down becasue when i tried a driect Start -> shutdown.... NOTHING happened again!

Think windows is slightly buggered in someway?
