Windows Taking LONG Time to Shutdown....

Hi all,

after my HD had a little 'episode' (for the second time - Maxtor 200gig) i installed a fresh copy of windows onto a new 40gig HD as a temp. fix....

However, i am having a couple or odd issues when i come to shutdown the PC using the normal Start -> Turn off Computer -> Shutdown

- this takes a long time to shutdown and sometimes appears to do NOTHING does not even leave windows! (

If I go Start -> Log Off -> Switch User -> Shutdown, WIndows does log off and shutdown but takes a little longer than it should... especially if the PC has been on for a while!

I'm guessing there is something a little wrong with the windows install either that or there is a background application that windows cant seem to turn off properly...

Any ideas exactly what is causing this issue and how i can fix it???

(Regedit) > HKCU>Control Panel>Desktop

Set HungAppTimeout to 1000
AutoEndTasks to 1
WaitToKillAppTimeout to 1000

And if you want a nice 'apparent' speed boost, set MenuShowDelay to 0. Or 25 or whatever.

You'll need to restart explorer to make the changes happen.

Ctrl + Shift + Esc for task manager, close explorer.exe, then File > New Task > Explorer.exe and there you have it.

OK... so after the PC was on for a while... not over-night but all day then it took a while to shutdown again

- i had to use the log off -> switch user -> shut down becasue when i tried a driect Start -> shutdown.... NOTHING happened again!

Think windows is slightly buggered in someway?

Try installing microsoft's user profile hive cleanup utility. Just install it and it will do its thing at shutdown, you do not have to do anything to run or configure it.
