i'm looking to replace my old 2011 laptop that has a i7-2670qm @ 2.2ghz and an nvidia 555m gpu.

thing is it has a 128GB and 512GB SSDs in there and performance is absolutely fine (surprised me it lasted this long) - even gaming (assassins creed 2, brotherhood, revelations etc @ 720p). i'm flying more and hate taking out a bulky laptop so looking at something like (amazon copy/paste) Microsoft Surface Pro 4 12.3 inch Tablet with Pen (Intel Core i7-6650U 2.2 GHz, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD) . side note, is this a big drop from my laptops quad core?

now i don't really need more performance than my laptop but I am having problems finding something with a decent GPU (nvidia or AMD) since I would like to throw in my wireless adapter, pair with a 360 controller and play some of my steam library on it from time to time as i do with my laptop currently.

If you want Surface with high performance, go with the Surface Book.

Or if you really want to game then just look at some Alienware or something.

had a look at the book with nvidia but it seems kinda crappy. nvidia graphics with 1GB memory? my 2011 laptop had 2GB for the GT 555m.

interesting to see though that 5 years on a tablet is still leagues behind a 2011 midrange laptop in cpu and gpu performance. at this rate it's going to be aaaages before i can get a tablet that's good enough. i'm not even going to mention (further) the pathetic razer "gaming" tablet i saw while googling. was like looking at a laptop from 2008 ffs

For any kind of real tablet gaming you'd be best served with Nvidia streaming... and I'm not even sure how well that works.

Tablets run on like... 5 watts total... it will be a while before you can really game on them locally. Even a low end GPU requires 15x more power.

Being on a tech forum, you should know that 940m > 555m, despite "muh geebees".

You're not going to get gaming laptop performance out of an x86 tablet. Tablets are designed for carrying around adequate performance, not being heavy, hot, noisy and thick.
