I fuckin' hate toolbars. I eradicated the office of toolbars except for one guy's computer. He's a n00b power user, and would probably flip out if I changed his computer around. His machine is a security disaster, but it works. I could push the issue, and get my way, but in the end, it really isn't my job, and it would cause needless stress. Everything is backed up, so as long as he doesn't get a hold of Cryptolocker, or something like that, damage should be repairable.

I used to work in a place where the computer was shared, and every time I would come into my shift and log in, yahoo messenger always fired up since I guess it installed for all users. I started deleting it after a couple of days, but they kept reinstalling it. Luckily, I was able to toss a hidden batch file in the startup folder to get rid of it

I started deleting it after a couple of days, but they kept reinstalling it. Luckily, I was able to toss a hidden batch file in the startup folder to get rid of it

The easiest solution would have been to delete its startup entry in the registry under your user branch. HKEY_Current_User > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Startup. Then it won't load or waste resources while you're logged-in.

I'd use Win3.1 in a vm. Actually, I should do that myself. I never really used it when it was current; too bloated. I preferred DOS :^D

Win 3.1 actually screamed on my old 200 MHz Pentium and 16MB RAM (I primarily used Win NT 4.0, then Win 2000) on that machine as I kept upgrading. It might be too fast on a modern PC.

Yea, that would have worked, too. I didn't have access to the registry, however.

Win3.1 fan, or a reference that it was actually a DOS application? I didn't see much use in it, and it used too many resources. I had a shareware program that let you click a box on the "desktop" to launch an application, and that all I needed for a Windows-like program. Everything else I did from the command prompt.

Basically that it was an application, and you can't prefer an app over an OS. What are you going to do, run the app w/o DOS? Or specifically (at a point in time), ANY other OS?

I can't think if any must-have Win3.1/Win16 apps that didn't run in DOS. I know they're probably out there, I just don't recall any.

Now Win95/Win32 software is a different story entirely...

Wow, for fun I did a packet sniff. You should see the traffic all this spyware is producing LOL.

Also some of it is actually going to US government owned IP ranges such as DOD. Rather interesting...

140.10.253.220 is one of them. Did not check every single IP but I'm sure there's more.

Most of it is going to China though. I should probably turn this off for now.

Actually I can probably check my spam folder for all sorts of goodies, I did not even think of that. It's on a completely separate network though but I can probably just open up the imap port temporarily to download the emails in Outlook Express. :biggrin:

I don't think that guy is gonna call back though, but at this point I'm just going to try to make this installation as terrible as possible for fun of it. At least I'll have it for later.

So..I wasn't sure what this thread was about, but I just got a call from "Rob" (from India) at Windows Technical Support on my cell phone trying to tell me there was something wrong with my computer.

I told him there sure was, it wasn't working. Rob then was very excited to hear that he could indeed help me with my broken Windows machine. Of course then I let Rob know I discovered it just wasn't turned on and that I couldn't thank him enough for fixing my broken computer! I asked if I could speak to his manager to let them know what a wonderful and helpful job Rob was doing in assisting me with fixing my computer for absolutely free, and the connection must have been bad because suddenly the call dropped

OMG that is too funny. I think i got the same guy when i was at my mother in laws but with his accent it sounded like Rahrp with Veendows Supporth. I only had time to screw with him a little bit I asked him which provider he was seeing the problem with CenturyLink (telco) or Charter (cable) and he said "yes." So i asked him for the offending IP and port numbers and he said he had all that info. I later hung up when i got bored but he tried calling a couple more times from his CID blocked number. Im just thankful i got the call and not my in law because she would have done what he told her. Thankfully she was relegated to a user account on my father in laws pc for past naievite.
