To prevent piracy? More like drive more people to it. People will buy computers with that preloaded just to save a buck.

The average person in those targeted areas is not going to pirate Windows. Especially not when they have to reinstall the would be pirated OS themselves. These are people that have either very little or no experience with a computer.

It might drive you to piracy, but certainly not a third world family who just bought a PC to get on the internet. It's the perfect solution, especially when people might trade or sell these versions to piraters in order to make money; nobody else but the people it is targeted for will want this OS. :)

Not true. You are drastically overestimating the difficulty of reinstalling windows, and it's easier to get a pirated copy of windows over there, since it is sold on the streets for little less than the cost of a CDR.

AFAIK, it is much harder for the average american to get a pirated copy of windows than it is for someone in taiwan.

I'm fully aware that piracy is more rampant over there and copyright laws (where applicable) are not very well enforced, however the average person who bought a $300 pc with a copy of this software is not going to go out and pirate this OS because it is somewhat limited. I could see them pirating a copy of office to go along with the pc, but not the operating system. It is not difficult to install windows in the slightest, but if you have no experience with a computer then it would pose a problem. (Formatting and such; I doubt you can install an OS over this one). Also going into BIOS and booting from cd, etc. These are things that all of us on this board can easily do, but could your grandmother? And she likely has more experience with technology than some of the targeted people.

Hardware limiting it also helps out with the piracy issue. These are PCs that in some places are distributed with government sponsored programs and aid. I doubt anybody is going to buy this seperately and install it themselves.

Edit: The topic title is entirely misleading and if you didn't read the article then I can see why you would think so. I'm wondering if the OP even read the article.

You are making it seem like they are setting the things up on a wicker basket they weaved for the last 3 months in there hut. And when there 13 little brothers and sisters peddle enough to get electricity they can use it for 5 minutes. When the fact is they were probably using faster internet then we have now when they were in grade school.
