The issue seems to stem from the fact that the lazy oafs at HP used an image based on an Intel PC for both their AMD and Intel machines. Duh! 😕

So not really a Microsoft issue, more to do with a lazy OEM.

For the record, I've updated AMD rigs to SP3 that I've built and installed XP on, without any issues.

Lucky you. My custom-built AMD system got nuked by SP3. Probably because my mainboard is an A8N32-SLI DeLuxe. That happened before the various fixes got posted in the MS Tech forum thread.

I managed to recover all my partitions except one. I had imaged my OS with Perfect Image before the upgrade, as usual, but that did not help as the reboot occurred before Perfect Image could do its thing and my partition tables got screwed anyway.

My system is totally messed. I got the blue screen of death durring the update process. Now I continue to get the BSOD after running my system for a couple of minutes. I can only run in safe mode. I have a custom built AMD system with an A8V motherboard and an OEM version of XP. I'm not sure what the issue is, but I suspect that it is XP SP3.

I'm trying to remember why the clamour and rush to update to SP3.

Weren't there early reports that SP3 improved gaming speed by some ungodly amount? 10%?

Then there's always this site that shows speed comparisons between XP SP2 and SP3 and Vista RTM and SP1. In these tests, SP3 slowed down frame rates a couple of percent on average, it appears.
