If anyone got a copy they don't want, I'm interested in it. Obviously I can't buy it from you, but I'll give you a few bucks to cover shipping costs. Shoot me an email or PM.

this is $1500 worth of Software, I doubt anyone will just be giving it away.

True, but how many people who ordered it really need it or will use it? I'm sure there's plenty of people out there who ordered this to try and make a buck, didn't get the FRS version, and now have no use for this.

MrNutz, you do realize that Lindows is engaged in a lawsuit battle with MS, don't you? This is not the place to go for impartial, accurate information, and that page is riddled with nonsense and stunningly misplaced words like "virus" and "trojan" and "infect." And, uh, no, you don't need Office 2003 to open Office 2003 files. Past versions will open your files fine. The feature they're talking about is a very specific one that only certain parties (businesses mostly) might use if they have extreme security needs regarding locking down documents.

The article is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifing nothing.

Both of my parents are engineering contractors, though their specific fields don't really lend themselves to reselling products. (Dad specializes in flat panel displays and ISO9000 compliance. Mom was on the materials design team for the stealth bomber) If they qualify though... sweet.

Look what I got today :) for free, but with a hitch. The copy I received had two stickers sealing the box, one on top of the other. Upon closer examination the bottom sticker was already opened so it made me suspicious if they placed something else in the box. I decided to open the thing since I do not want Micro up my butt about nsr. Anyhow I noticed that there is an additional duplicate disk 3 for the server install. The other disks are neatly packaged in dvd cases but this one was sitting outside the cases along with the documentation. So I guess im wondering why in the world would microsoft open the box to insert this additional disk. Any suggestions? BTW here's the nice letter that accompanied the software.

Dear XXXX,
Enclosed in this package, please find a NOT FOR Resale (NFR) copy of Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003. This copy is strictly for your use internally within your organization, and we're sending it to help you become more familiar with the software.

As part of the Sweet Success with Windows Small Business SErver 2003 Campaign, you are eligible for a For Resale version of the software once you complete the program requirements (including taking the Partner University course and logging once customer success story). The software included in this package is not in place of that for resale copy, but rather, in addition to it.

Windows Small Business SErver 2003 NFR Usage Guidelines.
Per the End user license agreement accompanying the software, usage is defined demonstration test or evaluation. "software identified as not for resale or nfr may not be sold or otherwise transferred for valued or used for any other purpose other than demonstration, test or evaluation. Please note that this does not preclude production use. The software that you are receiving is still the same retail software that would be bought off the shelf and can be used in production as long as it is done in accordance with the above requirements. Thank you for your compliance with the above NFR requirement and for your continued support of Microsoft products and services

Best Regards.

I threw together a barebones PC with spare parts I had lying around. I would like to use it as a server on my home network (2 PC's and one Mac). Also I would like to use it as a small internet host, or web server (I have DSL).

Can I really use a home server, through my router's firewall as an internet web server?

What OS should I use? I have have an obscene number of not-for-resale OS options and I have no idea which to use:

XP Professional
Windows 2000 Advanced Server
SQL ServerTM 2000 Developer Edition
Exchange Server 2000 Enterprise Edition
Mobile Information Server 2002
Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server
SharePointTM Portal Server 2001
Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition
Windows Server 2003 Web Edition
Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition
Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium Edition
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services

The MS marketing literature is full of things like "providing solutions" and "streamilining infrastructure" and blah blah blah. I can't figure out what to use to do what I want to do...

You should use FreeBSD. That way your server will be more secure and you can run it on a Pentium 233, with no loss in performance, like I do. :D

I had to make a custom rule in Apache to block all the brute force hack attempts on Microsoft IIS, even though I don't run IIS. There were so many that I literally couldn't see legitimately logged usage.

If you are "Windows only" for whatever reason, then Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition. Of course the recommended system requirements will then jump up to 733 mhz.
