Windows Slows Down when Inserting CD/DVDs

I can't figure this out exactly. Whenever inserting discs (particulary blank DVDs to burn) into either one of the DVD drives on my PC, Windows slows down entirely while reading the disc. This also happens with other discs, not just blank ones. I've tried to turn off autoplay, but that doesn't seem to do anything. Windows still automatically reads the discs and slows down while doing so. Anyone else experience this? Any ideas?

This is a problem that has always occured in windows for many years. Windows XP Professional x64 edition is the only version I know of that does not have this issue.

Do you have your optical drive on the same IDE channel as your HD?

No, both optical drives are on their own IDE channel, the secondary one.

What software do you have to run CDs or DVD or burn CDs, DVD-R, DVD-RW or DVD-RAM. Blanks always seem to take a while it seems. But it should take that long maybe windows burner or a third party app is trying to figure if it should run or not.

Also you might look into turning off autorun instead of autoplay
I'm kind of spoiled because I use gamedrive and it has a quick right click uncheck autorun on an optical drive in the gamedrive manager.

The last time I did a search for manually turning off autorun I kept finding tips about autoplay or turning off autorun for all optical drives.

if you can't find anything solid about autorun you could try a trial of gamedrive or virtualdrive and see if turning off the autorun helps

Probably because Explorer is constantly polling the drive to see if there's media in there and when it finally gets a positive response it reads the disc to get the stats and volume label and that takes a few seconds and explorer blocks on those reads.

Of course this is all speculation since Windows is closed source.

Make sure you have installed your chipset drivers and have installed any updated IDE drivers for your motherboard.

Drives (excuse the pun) me mad too.

I used to battle with it, but now I have learnt to accept that its just a PITA. Seems to get worse with each generation of drives too, I think these multi-format all singing all dancing all burnining all reading Dual Layer DVD recorders are the worst yet.

Maybe the Blueray / HD DVD battle will be won on this battleground ?
