On a laptop using an Intel Wi-Fi 5300

So, in the bottom right in the notification area when I put my mouse over the wi-fi connection status it says

Connection status: unknown
The service to detect this status is turned off.

Anyone know how to fix this?

I'm going to take a wild guess (based on your lack of detail) and presume you have a laptop.

If so, then go to : Start - Run- type in "services.msc" (without quotes) and hit Enter.

Scroll down to the bottom of the list, and there will be an item called WLAN AutoConfig (Vista) and something similar in XP. Make sure it is started, and if it isn't, set it to Automatic and then click the Start button.

If this is not the problem, then look for a switch somewhere on the laptop itself that allows you to turn the WLAN on and off.

If you don't have one, go into Control Panel - Network and Sharing - Manage Network Connections (Vista) and make sure it is not disabled.

If this is a laptop then have a look around the front edge of it. Many new laptops, HP i know has this, will have a switch that turns the WiFi on and off. Its a power saving feature.

Already on automatic for the first one. The switch is not the problem. For the last thing yes I'm sure that the wireless card isn't disabled. The issue right now is that it won't show if it's connected or not although it is.
