Windows Server Network using VMWare

I have Win2003, XP, and Vista and would like to create a virtual domain.

As practice for my education I would like to setup a DC and a VPN using Win2003. I have VMWare and all the OS's installed but something just isn't right. I have 2 NICs installed on the Host but only one connects and the XP system won't ping the Server. The XP and 2003 box have IP's. The server is using APIPA for the 2nd NIC and I don't see why.

I'm sure someone has tried this but I'm having problems getting started. Any help would be much appreciated.
