Windows Server DHCP: Superscope Question

Hi there, I have a /26 scope on Windows Server that is just about of addresses. I would like to make a /25 to replace it, but I have no /25's available. I would rather just ADD another /26 to the existing scope, but to do this you have to make a superscope. I am using a router configured as a DHCP relay for the actual physical network. Here's my question: if I have 2 member scopes in my superscope, but ALL the DHCP requests are only coming from 1 IP (the DHCP relay), will it be able to hand out IPs from the scope that isn't in the subnet from which the DHCP relay is sending? If so, when does it do this? When the first scope is full? If not, is there a way to do this? Thanks for all your help, let me know if you need more information. Thank you!!

I don't see why it wouldn't work. Superscope in Windows DHCP is just an administrative feature that allows groups of scopes to have a similar configuration. It is made to make administration easier but doesn't affect the functional side.

It would depend on the implementation, but I don't see any reason why using a DHCP relay would impair the use of superscopes. As with DHCP on a local network, remote DHCP clients will get addresses from the new scope once the old one is full.

That being said, I've never run into a situation where superscopes were a desirable solution.

This I agree with. Trying to cheat with DHCP will make your Network guys life a living hell.

That's why you ALWAYs let the network guys handle DHCP and DNS. They know how to do it right. :)

You let server folks start mucking with it and all hell breaks lose.

I agree with this as long as you arent advocating letting network equipment handle dhcp...talk about a PITA

the it company i work for is doing a lot of work for a health system lately....pretty sure they still do DHCP on their switches.

im also pretty sure one of them told me even Cisco told them to cut it out but i think they dread making it a project and dealing with it
