Windows Server Backup in 2008 R2

I'm using VMWare Player to run a small appliance. We've been using Windows Server Backup to make image backups of the Windows server. Will the VM be properly included in this backup if it's running while the backup runs?

Is the backup running on the host or the guest?

Win2008R2 is host (and runs server backup), vmware player is running a linux guest
