Windows server 2012 RC available for download

If you are talking about server core, that has been a feature of windows server 2008 and server 2008 r2. not sure if it is still called core in server 8, but it is nice as it reduce the amount of stuff installed vs a regular install

Is this a new build or is it the same one that has been out for a few months? It isn't obvious from the link.

honestly I’m not sure.. I received an email to download the “new beta” of it, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t already been out there a while.

After using it for a while, there is NO reason for metro to be in a Server OS. NONE. Especially seeing as how it didn't have the app store. There aren't even any metro apps. Just normal programs being launched from an unnecessary UI.

I really wouldn’t call the UI metro.. It’s a widening of the server manager page that windows 2008 used heavily. It’s not the block metro interface that windows 8 Desktop has. From what I’ve read there are no plans to integrate the metro UI into Server. They are however starting to take a more unixlike approach with more powershell and command line administrating to it rather than the wizard approach.

This is what I got when I clicked on the start menu after booting into Server 8. I'm aware of the server manager page, but tell me how this is not metro:

Far enough.. I haven't seen that screen in any of my installs, granted I haven't really done much with it as work keeps getting in the way. I will say I do in fact stand corrected.. not sure wtf that's about.

taking away the start menu on the server IMO is a massive mistake, getting to BASIC features like just the shutdown, cmd, run and control panel are now a process to get to where before was very few clicks even when remoted in on the tiny screen of the iphone and doing remote administration it was easy.

It's interesting they want to revert everything to powershell it looks like with minimal GUI... if that is the case why the big cost for an underdeveloped OS?? We can all just download most Linux dists for free and I have to say, Ubuntu 12.04 is pretty slick and now has integration with FREE Hyper-V server so installing it is really simple and very inexpensive.

I really think before M$ puts everything into this new tablet world, they start competing in that world first.
