Windows Server 2008

I think it rocks, but of course I'm biased 🙂 I'm way more excited about this release than I was about Vista.

Downloading it and will fire it up on a virtual server later this week. No plans to move to it however. I jsut got an SBS 2003 server in last May that wont be retired for 3 years.

Edit: Nice process MS has setup for getting this. It generates an error of "error" when i first submitted my contact info, then my billing info, then my checkout info.

I'll be checking it out one of these days. I'm really just hoping there will be improvements to Group Policy management.

Such as? There are improvements to the way policies can be stored in AD (this was introduced with Vista), but are you looking for something specific? I'm assuming you're already using GPMC, right?

yea im excited to. being that windows server 2003 was one of the most stable versions of windows there ever was i cant wait to see what the new version is. is it true that the 2003 version's kernel is based off of a Linux kernel?

Well, such as being able to push out software that doesn't use MSI. Personally, I wish all software would just be distributed as an MSI, but that just isn't the case.

Also, I often have settings or software that I would to push out to specific computers in serveral different GPOs. I wish there was more granular control in that regard. Plus there are lots of options, such as assigning printers and mapped drives, that we have to do through custom scripts.

I hear you, but there are ZAP files as another option: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/231747

I'm not sure I completely understand what you're saying, but maybe WMI scripts could help you target your GPOs more granularly?

such as assigning printers
You can do this with 2003 R2 (http://www.microsoft.com/techn...06/08/ManagePrinters/) and I think there are some improvements in Vista/2008.

No. I'm not even sure what would make you think that. The 2003 kernel is the successor to the XP kernel(which is the successor to the 2000 kernel, etc).
