Windows Search versus OLD Search

Windows search by default searches only what it has indexed (ie your documents only), but you can get it to search all files. The biggest problem is far too many people turn the service off (particularly in Vista) because they don't like it accessing the hd then wonder why they can't find anything. Windows search is much better at looking within files.

Regular search goes through almost everything, but is poor at looking inside files.

Checking back my settings, I could have sworn I have indexed everything.

However, by default, it does not select the Windows folder, Program Folder, and the Local Settings folder of the Documents and Settings folders to index. That fixed the screenshot's particular problem.

But, when I do another search for specific files containing a certain string, it does not bring up the complete list.

try putting the filename in the filename box.

also, tell it where to look in the last box. c: drive etc...

although the new search is useful for looking inside files, i always use the old search to find anything on my machine. is it habit? i dunno, but the old one is pretty tried and true and sometimes the new search doesn't find what im looking for. and i do let it index too
