i'm using win98se, and every time I double click on an mpg or mpeg I get an error window that says "There is no script engine for file extension .mpeg"
I use Xing as my default viewer, and I can still launch Xing and then open the movies from there, but that's a pain in the ass. The file types are still associated with Xing (The icon with the file is Xing, and under file types, there is an entry for them)
The only thing I've changed recently is I used a reg cleaner (D'OH!), but I only removed a file association for .vbs files, because Xing was trying to open them too, and it was screwing up any app that used vbscripts. I wouldn't think that would screw up all the Xing associations, would it?

Try removing the windows media player in Add/Remove section and reinstalling it.( It should reregister the extensions)
If that doesn't work, try renaming them to MPG instead of MPEG.
