Windows routing software, bandwidth control

I'm going to be splitting a relatively slow broadband connection (SDSL 256 most likely) pretty soon. Two users... I play online games a lot, and the other user likes to do stuff like sending emails with file attachments and such that, if not done under controlled bandwidth conditions, will pretty much ruin my games. Also, I have a habit of hogging bandwidth by downloading as much stuff as I can, which would ruin the other user's ability to do much...

So, I need some routing software - the DSL modem will be PCI since that way is free under a current special; even if it were external I'd still need something for the bandwidth control. Basically anything that calls itself routing software will do the routing sufficiently, I just need something that can allocate useable bandwidth between the clients. Both systems are win98.

Free would be preferable of course, but if that's not an option, something under the $70 mark that would buy me what I need for a Linux box. =)

Thanks...

I don't know of any Windows or hardware solutions that will let you configure bandwidth; I've tried WinGate, WinRoute, Linksys router, and now using a Netgear router, and none offer bandwidth modification. I suggest you use a Linux or BSD box with multiple NICs. Then you can have an excellent firewall using ipchains, ipf, or ipfw, plus adjust your bandwidth spread using dummynet.
Currently I use dummynet to limit bandwidth for certain servers (rules manage different ports), but I'm sure you can use dummynet to limit either entire interfaces or specific port rules for each interface (if that makes sense.)

i'm having the same problem Sofa,im in a network with some friends and we got cable (at my location)
i dont know how to split equally the bandwith that i'm getting from internet;i also want to split the bandwith equally if one or more users of the network is not logged on(for example,if only 1 of the users is logged on,he should have the entire bandwith)
all of the users got windows boxes but i can install a linux box in the network
GigaCluster i didnt find any good documentation about dummynet, just some posts on forums (im not too good with linux);can you tell me if that may solve the problem ?

BOOM

can't vouch for this software, I have used sygate's home software before ICS came along and made things so much easier for me. and sygate worked, this is a similar but more featureful product which has bandwidth throttling

eek.. just checked the price on it and its pretty expensive. :(

you might try to find an older version that might be cheaper.. I know its been around a while and the office version has always supported bandwidth throttling
