Ok I'm running 98SE and everything is running very well except when I have been opening an' closing various programs which eventually take my resources down to 56% or so.
I have 128MB of RAM and generally start after boot-up with 92% resources free.
Is there anyway of actually getting win98SE to free the bloody memory up after it has closed the program? It annoys me because if my resources are below say 60% when I want to shut-down the bloody thing will hang $#%$#%$#%$#^$#^%$#^%$#%$#. Pause for relection....thank u Mr Gates.
I did try to install the shutdown patch for 98SE but it mentioned something about being for network drives?!?
Maybe I got the wrong patch?
So any clues how to make this generally fine computer give back a little of what it takes?

Windows 2000. Only real way I know of :)

It's one of the MAIN reasons I keep using it.

I agree with Shudder, try Win2k if it's got to be a MS OS, otherwise try BeOS. As far as I know there isn't a way to recover memory used by Win9x other than reboot, but if there is a way I too would like to know.

There are tons of small utilities that scan for recoverable memory in Win9x and in WinNT/2K. Two of my favorites are RAM Idle and CacheMan.

If you run out of "System Resources" quickly, you may want to increase the size of the "Names Cache" and "Directory Cache". You can do so with these utilities.

Do a search on these forums for "System Resources". I have posted much more on this topic.

Cheers.

OK using the memturbo II program now - It was mentioned in the searches.

Seems OK so far. Still getting occasional hangs on shut down though.
It shows 84% resources on bootup now...down 6% with the new program.

I'm not entirely convinced about what it really does apart from showing you what it has done in a graphical format.

But I'll give it a good old testing.... :)

Will see how the other recommendations go too... :)

The main culprits are ICQ - especially the new 2000b version - seems to have a mind of it's own..
Gamespy hangs very regularly after a heavy CS session.
I'm also not too sure about the Enternet ADSL connection program that I have too - it seems to hang as well.

If I'm just running Windows and Microsoft software (office etc) it's all very smooth and responsive and totally stable - IE and OE ....may be exceptions!

Mainly all these other products that seem to cause problems with 98SE....

All this points to being online as a possible cause... hmmm....maybe the connection program?

Gavin, have you got the new version 1.4 of the PPoE Enternet program from Netvigator?

yes using it right now...
seems worse than before too...;-(
frequently hangs when disconnecting.... :(
I liked the old BB Connect program that was before the PPPoE system..much more stable and reliable in my opinion.
Enternet 300 has more features for sure but seems more troublesome... but to be fair it seems to be ok on my secondary cheapo PC...
I've just deleted and re-installed it tonight - so far so good... It takes a few MB's of RAM too..
