Under the system properties, Windows only shows 511 MB RAM. Under safe mode, however, it shows the full 512 MB. Right now, I'm suspecting that my SBLive! drivers stole the megabyte, but does anyone else have any other ideas?

Do you have a motherboard with built in video? What version of Windows are you using?
My XP reports all my memory and I have the SB Live! also.
I think your integrated video (if you have) stole it. :)

I am pretty sure integrated video solutions use up more than one megabyte of memory even when it is doing something as simple as displaying the desktop. I forget the exact way of calculating the amount of memory required per resolution and color depth and refresh rate but at 1024x768@16bits and 85 Hz will take more than a megabyte to hold all the info. Correct me if I am wrong.

Your motherboard reserved it... my EPoX 8K7A has that option... it reserves a hole between 15-16MB... dont ask me what it uses it for.

I think that's it; my i815e mobo at work takes 1 MB from Windows too and it's for the integrated video controller.

I have seen antivirus software use 1MB of memory when viewing the system properties. Since you can see all of your memory in safe mode, you have a software issue.

Sorry for not giving more system details, but I don't have integrated video, and the memory hole setting in the BIOS is disabled - I tried enabling it and Windows detected 510 MB.

I'll have to check on my anti-virus software about that.

Thanks for the help.

My Win98SE Soyo TISU 815e machine also shows 511 mb RAM.
No integrated video but I am using NAV and a SB16 sound card.......
