I keep getting crashes randomly on entering Windows 98SE. Once the green desktop screen comes up, I get a Fatal Exception Error 0E at 0167:BFF83BFC. Upon this crash, the system stops booting and I have to ctrl-alt-delete shutdown. It's not heat related cause it happens even on a cold boot. I disabled USB and that helped alot, but I am still getting those crashes. I recently upgraded the motherboard, video card, and RAM, but I am still getting the same problems. I tried replacing the SCSI card but that didn't make any difference. I also tried a fresh clean install of Windows 98, but that didn't help either. I never overclocked the system. I did install the drivers for the Intel IDE controller.

Here's the current system config.

Epox Intel 815E mobo. (originally Asus P3V4X)
Leadtek Geforce GTS PRO 32mb
3 20GB IDE hard drives.
Tekram 315U SCSI2 card
Plexwriter 12/4/32 SCSI CDRW
Plextor ultraplex 40X CDROM
floppy
300W addtronics power supply
addtonics 7896 Case
PIII 650 CPU.
256MB PC133 Micron Mem.
sblive sound card
intel pro 100+ NIC.

This error has been going on for over 6 months. I really hate this system. I have another system that uses a supposely inferior Tyan trinity 400 with a similar configuration except with no scsi. I put 6 PCI cards in that system and USB devices it still works. That was the first motherboard I found that works with flawlessly with all 6 PCI slots filled.

problem is that it doesn't always do it so I don't know if it will make a difference.

I'm having a similar problem, though mine seems less severe. I noticed the problem once I installed Nero 5.5 with my new CDRW that I got for Christmas. My error code is 0177:BFF83BEA. If you hit 'enter' at the blue-screen, nine times out of ten the screen will go away and the computer will finish booting up as normal, and will also operate normally. Occasionally the BSOD doesn't show up at all. I haven't found a solution, although I am heavily considering doing a Windows reinstall soon.

I had similar problems in win98 when I installed a SCSI card and drive. In my case I had not terminated the SCSI chain properly.
