I did a search, here in the tech support, for " windows protection error", and read up on other peoples' problems with it, before I posted this message. I started getting the " windows protection error. you may need to restart your computer", message, only recently. The system is a FIC AZ11 atx board, with an AMD Duron 750mhz. PC 133 sdram , not overclocked. Temperature running cool, too. Windows ME is the operating system. System has been running fine, for two months, then, all hell broke loose, on getting this message very very frequently. I suspected hardware problem, switched out power supply, video card, memory. Nothing helped, UNTIL I put a different harddrive in, and reinstalled OS. Ran fine. Then, I put old hardddrive back in, and, same thing,,,," windows protection error....".. SO, I ran fdisk, and reformatted that drive, and reinstalled Windows ME, so far, so good. This particuliar computer, where the problem occurred, was not ever on the internet, so, I think I can rule out worms, viruses. Anyone know what could have caused it?

Sounds like typical Windows OS corruption to me. You re-installed the OS and tried it on another hard drive, too, and those worked fine, so the problem was obviously with the original WinMe s/w installation. If viruses did not play a part, I would suspect Windows just followed its predecessors and crapped out on you for no apparent reason.
