there are a ton of possible things that could go wrong... wtf im not about to test each one out bc its prob something real simple to fix... anyone get this before? if worse comes to worse ill install w2k on her comp. these are the possible problems:
If a real-mode driver and a protected-mode driver are in conflict.
If the registry is damaged.
If either the Win.com file or the Command.com file are infected with a virus, or if either of the files are damaged.
If a protected-mode driver is loaded from the System.ini file and the driver is already initialized.
If there is a physical input/output (I/O) address conflict or a random access memory (RAM) address conflict.
If there are incorrect complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings for a built-in peripheral device (such as cache settings, CPU timing, hard disks, and so on).
If the Plug and Play feature of the computer's basic input/output system (BIOS) is not working correctly.
If the computer contains a malfunctioning cache or malfunctioning memory.
If the computer's motherboard is not working properly.
If you installed Microsoft Office 97 and you are using the Novell Client 32 software.

My advice? Go through that list, one by one, and try to fix each problem. There's nothing else we can really do with just a message of "windows protection error" and "windows 98".

run MSCONFIG in Safe Mode & disable all the startup items, reboot & see if you can get into normal Windows

....anywayz
Press F8 before the Windows splash screen.....select Command Prompt mode (or something like that)
After it gets to the command prompt run Scandisk to check the disk for errors and also go ahead and do a surface scan. It will take a while but it could be that you may have a bad sector on the drive.
It could still be many a other reason though....need mo info.

This was a notoriously problem with certain 3com network cards. There were driver issues that caused the Windows Protection Error. If you have a 3com network card, take it out and see what happens.

If so, here's a link to DocMem. It's pretty good and very free. :)

Did you recently install a new PCI card and software? I had similar problem when I installed the software for a Sound Blaster PCI128. I'm glad I Ghosted before I did because installation ate my setup, and the fix was moving the card to a different PCI slot and re-installing the software.

See if you can check for any conflicts.
