Windows protection error on boot up - unusual system!

My buddy has an older system using an ASUS TX-97 Rev 1.21 motherboard and a K6-2 300Mhz CPU.
This motherboard was originally designed to run CPU¡¦s up to a maximum speed of 233Mhz.
The BIOS has been updated so that a K6-2/3 CPU can be installed at speeds of 400-450Mhz at the correct voltage using the 66 or 75Mhz FSB.
We purchased a very cheap K6-2 300Mhz CPU (US$15 including heat-sink and fan!) to test if this BIOS upgrade actually worked ¡V which it does ?º
At present the CPU is over-clocked to 360Mhz ¡V using the 6 x 60Mhz option. This is an unusual CPU speed, but the system is completely stable and reliable. Absolutely brilliant upgrade for the money ?º

HOWEVER!

An annoying problem often occurs at start-up ¡V The boot up screen announces that a Windows protection error has occurred.
The machine is then shutdown and re-started in safe mode ¡V and the system will boot into ¡§safe mode¡¨ windows.
The system can then be restarted in ¡§normal¡¨ mode and the system can be used all day or night without a glitch.

So how do we get the system to run first time in ¡§normal¡¨ mode?

The only thing that I have not done to the system is load the motherboard supplied PCI bus drivers ¡V however the system has been running perfectly without them with the previous CPU ¡V a P233MX.
I suspected we were perhaps running the CPU too far over spec ¡V but you can play games for hours (¡§Demonstar¡¨ ¡V get it at www.tucows.com) after it is running in normal mode and the system will not crash or lock up

I¡¦ll install the PCI drivers as a matter of course whilst this post is active and see what happens.

Any other suggestions appreciated ?º

I had the same problem on an old pentium 233 system.

If your overclocking the chip you may have to set it back to its original speed. Also I had 2 sticks of ram in the system, but I could never boot. As soon as I used 1 stick of ram, I have had no problem :)

The problem could be the ram. I only had room for a total of 2 slot of ram. Your setup may be different. Just try some different ram.

gtd2000, a question for you. what beta bios are you using? I have exactly the same board as you, but i can't go anywhere above 300. when i set it to anything above 300, it just shows as 300... Thanks a lot.

Rominl,
It's 0112_01
I can e-mail it to you if you like - very hard to find...
Zipped it's 104KB
Current jumper settings are:
BF1 1-2
BF0 2-3

FS0 2-3
FS1 2-3
FS2 2-3

I need to double check the Voltage settings - will be at my friends house this afternoon and report back.

The system is using Win95 so PowerJoe is hopefully on the nose with that tip :)

Unfortunately the 400Mhz setting is just out of reach due to the limitation of a 300Mhz CPU - but the system has really had a nice boost with this upgrade ;)

However I'll get the Win95 patch downloaded :)

gtd2000, you are also from Hong Kong?! Ha... we are all from HK... I wonder how many people are from Hong Kong here...

Can you email the bios to rominl@hotmail.com?? Thanks a lot for the help. I am not sure what beta bios i am using, but the one I use doesn't pass 300, which is exactly what i am using now. Thanks.
