Windows programs problem

I am having a problem in Windows XP. All of the windows programs such as Defragmenter, registry editor, and device manager don't work. The programs would just open and close by themselves. Every other program works, for example, Instant Messangers, internet browsers. Any ideas as to the problem? all help would be much appreciated.

Have you run a full virus check/spyware scan - making sure defintions are up to date? Have you always had this problem or did it start recently?

I had run a full virus scan and spyware scan with up to date definitions for both. This problem only recently started to happen.

Is there anyway you could list the processes running on your PC? Can you go to Start-->Run and type 'MMC'

Does that load up ok?

That loads up just fine, but the windows system tools that I am trying to launch aren't showing up in the processes.

Not to alarm you (hopefully this isn't your problem) I recently had a laptop where the built-in Windows XP defragger quit working ...it opened and closed without running or letting me engage it. After a while (I very rarely used the laptop) I got blue screens and shortly thereafter the hard drive died.

it might be worth running some kind of diagnostic test? Have you got access to Sandra or Prime 95 to test the stability of the machine?
