Windows PE

Yea you read that right. See the article Windows PE Revealed .

Now that I have your attention has anyone messed with this?

I am curious if I could make a simple computer with just this Windows PE on a CDR in a diskless PC and be able to run a topographical mapping program for my 4x4? It is rough riding and I am afraid of a hard drive head crash. Don?t need anything but a display, pointing device, and serial link to a GPS receiver. Any thoughts.

Thanks -SR

I dunno, there's a lot of missing functionality. I think your map program would have to be really basic to run.

As Microsoft states: "The following categories of functions of the Win32 API set are not present in WinPE:"
* Windows Multimedia
* Still Image
* OpenGL
* NetShow Theater Administration
* Bitmap
* Brush
* Windows Shell
* Access Control
* Power Options
* Printing and Print Spooler
* Window Station and Desktop
* Terminal Services
* User Profile
* Tape Backup
