windows or BIOS problem?

hi it seems that i have a windows problem that i cannot solve. i did a manual download of a microsoft.net update from the microsoft website. during this time i also set my virus scan to a heuristic search. after the DL was finished installing it informed me that it needed to restart my computer.

so i did that and as it started back up my BIOS popped up. i didn't want to mess anything up so i selected the "run fail safe" option. i then receive a message saying:
"verifying DMI pool data
boot from CD:"

after that nothing happens. all i get is a black screen. i hit the reset and am now getting the "we appologize but windows did not start successfully...". i've tried a safe mode start, last known good conf, and a normal start. none of those options work. any ideas on what i should do?

my specs are:

A64 3200
DFI lanparty UT nF3 250gb
MSI 6600gt
1 gig 400 mhz corsair value ram
80 gb seagate
latest bios from DFI website

Power off your power supply for a minute or so, power it back on, fire up the machine see if your error goes away. Make sure your bios is set to boot from hard drive first.

One thing I suggest when you run windows update, do not have anything else running. When you run a virus scan only run a virus scan nothing else. For smooth results. Hopefully you don't have to reformat.

Why did you choose run fail safe option ?

Seems to me, that you should have just existed "WITHOUT" making or saving any changes.

well, i had to reformat. hopefully i can get all the updates and virus protection i need quickly. thanks for the help.
