please help! I'm currently running windows 98se, i have windows nt pro. should i change? what benefits would i see. if you need more info let me know

There is no Windows NT pro(unless it's 3.x, don't know what those were called).
WinNT 4 came in Workstation and Server flavours(there are a few others as well, but those are mostly special licenses).
Win2K came in Professional and a couple of different Server flavours.

So, do you have Windows 2000 Professional, Windows NT 4 Workstation, or something else?
If it's NT4, it's gonna be worlds better for anything but gaming, assuming there are drivers for your hardware, NT4's hardware support is very lackluster so considder this.
If it's Win2K, it will be better for everything except possibly if you wanna play old DOS games.

what i have is windows 2000 pro and NOT NT(my bad). is there a problem with usb hardware and win2k? also i'm a gamer and want to get into more video editing, is win2k ok for that?

Yeah I went from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 Pro a while ago (like when it first came out) and I still use it today. It is by far my favorite OS. I would probably also use it for the new rig im building shortly, but it has a HyperThreading CPU and Win2K doesn't handle hyperthreading very well...

"The message is clear:"

Windows 2000 Professional > light years > Windows 98 SE

It has better memory management, protected memory (so if one app screws up, it doesn't take down the whole system, unlike Win9x/ME and MacOS9.x and previous), security, and better performance (if given enough RAM - i.e. 128MB minimum, or preferrably 256MB or more). The only fly in the ointment is the compatibility with some ancient DOS games.

MS Windows NT 3.5/3.51 Server/Workstation.

if you are even remotely considering video editing or any kind of graphics work you need to go with 2k for sure. 98 is good for gaming because it runs pretty much everything. you will run into issues with older games on 2k but for anything released in the past 2 years or less you should be ok.

2K Pro! 2K Pro! 2K Pro!
If you've got any really old games, you could try running them in Win98 compatibility mode on 2K, if they wont work out of the box.
Any games released within the last 2 years would probably run fine, and all the other stuff you wanna do would be much better on 2K.

How much ram do you have?

If you have less than 128MB, Win2K Pro might be a bit slower than Win98SE.

If you're limited to 64MB of RAM or less, I'd say stay with Win98SE.

Elsewise, Win2K.
