I'm trying to configure administrative rights for several test web sites, along with figure out how to get the page to come up without having to type the IP address with /homedir (e.g. 192.0.1.69/test1/default.htm). I think the administrative rights thing is pretty easy, I've just added each administrator to his web site respectively. If anyone has any tips they'd be much appreciated though. Or maybe some resource besides this crappy book I have by me. Thanks.

If you are trying to get the page to come up without entering the ip address i.e www.IIS.com look in the help under "http headers".

Bah. Just another great example why Microsoft sucks and to use Apache instead. I had to bind the additional IP address to the network card before creating the site. I couldn't do it with a site already made. How gay.

Yeah, but at least you didn't have to spend hours typing information into a vague .conf file and figuring it out totally by trial and error or reading the dozens of HOWTO files on the 'net. Nothing a little help file action couldn't have fixed in the first place.

True, but I bet this little glitch isn't in a help file. There's no apparent reason why it shouldn't work if you attach the IP after the fact. It's one of those stupid Windows errors when you spend hours trying to figure it out when it's something so stupid you want to kick yourself (or Microsoft..sure as hell wasn't my fault ;)).

Hi Genius,

Instead of creating virtual website, you can create another website on IIS ... doing so won't make you have to type in homedir to get to your website.

For instance, if you create a new website with a new IP address (or hostheader), you can browse your site using that particular IP address / domain name.

BTW I don't think IIS sucks .... I don't say I love it because administering IIS server with 600 sites on it definetly sucks, but I think it is a good product if you know how to use it well..

Err,

Thanks man, but I got it working just like you said about four hours ago. I just had to bind the ip addy to the net card before binding it to the site. It's kinda weird, but it works now using the ip addy only.

Oh and btw...I hope you're right about IIS being fairly good....as I learn this I'm going to have a minimum of 30 different sites to administer, and many more to come :( Thank god I have a few mentors here where I work.

Hey it should be fun administering 30 sites or so ... :)

The tricky stuff is if you have to run executable or scripts ...

oh yeah .. You'll "love" the stupid Frontpage extension if your user ever needs it too... :)

backup the metabase often ... you might need it just in case :)

Good luck and have fun
