windows not working (missing registered system files??)

win98 on my secondary computer isn't working. I don't know if this has anything to do w/ it but the other night I took out the existing 64mb RAM and put in a new 128mb. It was working there for a while, and I decided to change some of my virtual memory settings and cache settings. I also changed the memory settings in the BIOS. From "EDO 70ns" to "turbo". It was still working that night. But in the morning I turned it on and before getting to windows it has a big long message about not being able to find a device file. And System.INI is looking for it.

It says it for the following files: vnetsup.vxd,ndis.vxd,ndis2sup.vxd,vrtwd.386,vfix.vxd,vnetbios.vxd,vredir.vxd,dfs.vxd,nwlink.vxd,vserver.vxd, and viagart.vxd.

Then it says it cannot find krnl386.exe.

I thought maybe it was the changes I made to virtual memory, cache, and bios settings. So I set all those back to the default (by editing system.ini). It still says it though. I searched for those files that it listed and didn't find them. I also thought it could be a harddrive problem and noticed that the primary master and the primary slace were switched around. I unplugged and replugged in both of the harddrives but that didn't help. I also tried playing around w/ harddrive BIOS settings such as "IDE auto-detect" and setting everything to AUTO.

Can anyone help? I don't want to have to reinstall windows because it has some programs on there that I will not be able to recover (such as Office).

There is a possibility that part of your hard drive got corrupted or it is dying. I would first suggest you get these files and copy them to your windows and/or windows/system directories. Since this is your 2nd PC, you can just copy them from your primary PC onto floppies (assuming it is also running Win98).

uhh... my primary PC is running win95. 🙂

I searched on for this on google and found that all the files are probably reffering to an aspect of the network. Something about MSN leaving behind registry links.

And I checked on KERNEL386 and found that it might be due to hardware problems or BIOS problems or bus mastering problems. I have tried different things to make sure the hardware is working and have set the BIOS to its defaults, but I cannot turn off bus mastering since I can't get into win98.
