4 devices total:

2 ide hard drives, 2 cd-rom drive

on ide channel 1:
-master 80gb maxtor
-slave dvd-rom

on ide channel 2:
-master sony cdrw
-slave 40gb wd

all devices set to cable select using 80pin ide cables.

all devices are seen in the bios just fine.

when i get into windows, the sony cdrw can't be seen. i tried tinkering with changing it to pio mode and back to dma mode in the device manager, i got it to appear once, but disappeared again when i rebooted.

some help? thanks. maybe a bios setting? the device does have power, is seen in the bios, just not in windows explorer. tia

Could be the cd drive is just about dead. Try booting from a bootable Knoppix or Windows install disc and see if it will do that.

You didn't mention which version of windows you are
using, but a couple of things to try:

Go into Device Manager and REMOVE the DRIVE
Shutdown the PC and let Windows redetect it.
(if using WinXP click on 'Scan for Hardware changes' on Device Manager menu)

If above does not work try:
Download the latest ASPI layer from Adaptec and install.

One final fix requires editing the REGISTRY, which should be done as a last resort.
(if the above does not work I will post a step by step guide)

using windows xp pro.

i can now see the cdrw in the device manager. however, when i reboot, it is gone again, until i 'scan for new hardware', and it shows up again.

i dont want to have to do this EVERY single time i reboot, so what could the problem be?

thanks.

hey, problem resolved.

i ended up putting the hard drives on one channel, and the cd-roms on the secondary channel. after that, all was well. go figure.

thanks everyone
